I will feel very satisfied and fortunate to have chosen PET/MRI as a subject of my degree (M.D.). Because not always is your subject successful and your often then trying some other subject.
I want to highlight that modern science and research is very different from our idea of science in which a scientist makes a smart discovery with a BANG and goes down in history. Nowadays, success in science is very much a team success. We have mathematicians, engineers, physicist, even statisticians working in big institutions on projects costing up to millions of pounds. Most of the times, these projects have had ‘forecast’ and there is a good idea that they WILL succeed to some degree. An individual scientist like myself may only be one in a team of 20. So success nowadays is a very relative thing. Everyone is successful to some degree depending on how hard they work. Only a very very few people are so successful that they make it to wikipedia or win a Nobel prize, but mostly we’re happy to just be doing what we like doing most – research!
