I enjoy research, but I also enjoy teaching. I guess my favourite part of my job is to do both, when I can work together with students on my research.

For me it’s the creative aspect. I do more practical research, so it’s about solving physical problems to do with small mechanisms, electronics and optics. Me and my research group are always interested in ways to make better equipment for observing the light from stars and galaxies, so whenever I make a prototype system that meets that goal, I get a massive buzz.

So in a nutshell I’d say inventing something completely new and useful 🙂

The thrill of stumbling upon a new idea which provides answers to my questions. For example, in one of my projects, we are using texture of cancer images to predict its nature. I was not happy with the theory we were working with until just today, I read another theory which seems to make more sense. I just had a discussion with our mathematician and he think he can create a mathematical model based on this latest theory. So off to the workbench to see if it works better than our previous model! Some day, we will find the perfect model which describes cancer behaviour and that will revolutionize cancer treatment.

For me my favourite bit is probably doing practical experiments- especially the bit where you finally get some results and as the results are coming in you start to see something that confirms what you were looking for- that’s an amazing feeling
