Alan Turing was certainly an amazing guy- he started my field of work! He also deserves a lot of recognition for the horrible was he was treated by the government for being gay which was illegal at the time. So I think I agree with Usman that he is a bit of a hero for me.
Another scientist is probably Richard Feynman – he had so much foresight and a knack for explaining difficult concepts in a straightforward way. His approach to science was groundbreaking.
Finally a shout out to Rosalind Franklin who discovered DNA though lots of people would never give her credit for it until a while after her death because she was female- she was a very intelligent scientist and I admire what she did.
I can think of Henrietta Leavitt, who discovered the relationship between period and luminosity of Cepheid variables, but I really admire any female scientist who excelled in the early 20th century despite the fact that it was a very male-dominated environment.
