Uhh, hopefully my research will make things safer for people in the future- their details will be safe, there will be less stealing of people’s identities and online bank accounts and such. And also our armed forces will be able to communicate with each other safely without fear of being intercepted

I hope that the research I do would contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge, and that eventually it could be used for pursuits such as space travel, improved instrumentation to be used in space, and better astrophysical detection techniques.

      Hey Matthew.. very good question.

My research will directly help us to ‘map’ the universe by taking millions and millions of measurements of the position, speed and composition of stars and galaxies. This is the best way to understand where everything in the sky is and how it is moving. Then we can use computers to try to simulate it all, and understand where everything came from and also where it’s going! I think it’s important to understand these things as humans – we all want to know what’s ‘out there’ right? My instruments can all be used to detect planets around other stars.

Astro instrumentation (my research field) tends to come up with technologies that go beyond astronomy though. Astronomers are responsible for creating WiFi, and for software algorithms used in other sciences and industry. It’s nice to find an ‘everyday’ use for these things.. and it happens a lot!

Matthew, my work will influence the way we experience colour. The structural coloured systems I make display colour in a way that current methods of colouration cannot. They display very vivid and bright iridescent colours that are very aesthetically pleasing.

Its my contribution to the fight against cancer. When we eventually defeat cancer, I will be proud to think I had a role to play!
